Barron Park & Bol Park

Barron Park, on the land of the old Mayfield Farm, was the last big neighbourhood to join the city. Along Matadero Creek, Bol Park and its donkey pasture are a neighbourhood landmark.

Discover Barron Park & Bol Park

Mayfield Farm, now Barron Park, belonged from 1856 to Sarah Wallis, a leader of California’s women’s suffrage movement whose home drew Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. A state landmark plaque on La Selva Drive marks the site. (NoeHill, Wikipedia)

The neighbourhood stayed outside the city until 1975, the last major annexation, and many of its streets still have no sidewalks. (Wikipedia)

Bol Park, 13.8 acres along Matadero Creek, opened in 1974 on land once owned by Stanford physicist Cornelis Bol, inventor of the high-intensity mercury vapor lamp. (City of Palo Alto)

Donkeys have grazed the pasture beside the park since 1934. Perry, the model for Donkey in Shrek, died in January 2025 at 30, and Buddy and April live there today. (City of Palo Alto)
