Birge Clark

The architect (1893-1989) who designed much of Palo Alto in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, from the post office to the Lucie Stern Community Center.

Clark was the son of Arthur Bridgman Clark, a Stanford art professor and Mayfield’s first mayor. He set up his practice in Palo Alto in 1922 and over five decades designed 98 Palo Alto houses and nearly 400 buildings in and around town.

His works include the 1932 post office, the Hotel President, the Lucie Stern Community Center, the old police and fire building, the Medico-Dental Building on Ramona Street and the Sea Scout Building in the Baylands. Palo Alto has been called “The City that Birge Built”.
