City of Palo Alto Utilities

Palo Alto’s own city-run utility for water, electricity, gas and wastewater, a tradition that goes back to the 1890s.

Almost every other community in Northern California buys electricity and gas from PG&E, but Palo Alto runs its own. The young town built its own water system and electric plant soon after incorporating in 1894, and a 1922 history praised its low rates.

Water comes partly from the Hetch Hetchy system, and power reaches the city through a joint powers agency.
