HP Garage

The garage at 367 Addison Avenue where Bill Hewlett and David Packard started Hewlett-Packard in 1938, called the “Birthplace of Silicon Valley”.

In 1938 Dave and Lucile Packard rented the ground-floor apartment at 367 Addison Avenue, and Packard and Hewlett used the one-car garage as their workshop. Their first product was an audio oscillator, the HP 200A; Walt Disney Studios bought eight to test the sound systems for Fantasia.

The pair formed their partnership in 1939, deciding the order of their names with a coin toss. The garage is California Historical Landmark No. 976 and a National Historic Landmark. It is a private property, but it can be seen from the sidewalk.
