Lytton Plaza

The small public plaza at University Avenue and Emerson Street, built in 1964 and long the town’s traditional place of protest.

Bart Lytton built the plaza in 1964 across the street from his Lytton Savings Bank, for the “use and enjoyment of the people of Palo Alto”. Between 1968 and 1972 it became famous for rock concerts, protests and clashes with police.

The city later bought the plaza, and it remains Palo Alto’s traditional gathering place for demonstrations.
